trippy hippy shit...

lumerians are a recent discovery for me. they hail from san francisco and have a really nice trippy psych sound thats kind of remiscent of other current SF psych rock bands. what makes them different though is that they use no guitars, it's all synths, vibrafone and other assorted weirdo instruments and bass. real nice shit to smoke a joint or two to.

long time no post...

figured i've been neglecting this place long enough.

aluk todolo are a french band who make some very interesting music. their sound is a mix of krautrock, doom and droning dark ambient. here's their latest album, finsternis released by utech. slow, dark & heavy, just the way it should be.

heads up...

things might get a little quiet over here. i've joined the sludge swamp team, and will concentrate all my sludge/stoner/doom posts over there. i will keep posting stuff that doesn't really fit in the swamp here, but updates might get a little rare from now on, at least for a while. thanks for everyone who downloaded my stuff!

spiritus mortis

heavy slab of traditional doom next. spiritus mortis are the first doom band in finland. they started way back in 1987 and have been releasing stuff slowly but surely since. in 2008 the legendary sami hynninen, aka magister albert witchfinder of reverend bizarre and the puritan fame joined the band as vocalist. here's the new album, the god behind the god.

Old Mayor

Old Mayor - S/T [2009, Paradigms Recordings]

hadn't heard of these guys, just stumbled upon them. the label says this pretty well, so i'm just going to leave their description be.

"The debut from England’s almighty power duo, Old Mayor. Stripped down heavy sonics of the highest order, like the missing link between Burning Witch and Slint, perhaps. Recently seen supporting the likes of Boris, Russian Circles, A Storm Of Light and ASVA, there is something rather special going on here." - Paradigms Recordings

Lord By Fire

some of you might remember a band from a few years back called sword. they sadly chose the wrong name at the wrong time, since another band called the sword released their first full lenght the following year after swords debut, lord by fire and got really huge, at least in terms of doom metal. that left sword in a tough position. i dont know the details of what they've been doing, but it took them 5 years to release new material after the debut full lenght. finally last year they returned with a 7'', the band renamed to lord by fire after their debut. in my opinion they were the better sword, and i'm really glad they decided to get back into making music.

Abner Jay

Abner Jay - True Story Of Abner Jay [2009, Mississippi Records]

2-for-1 today.

Mississippi Records is one of my favorite labels (and apparently a lot of other peoples too). they specialize mostly in forgotten
blues and gospel from decades past, and their taste is pretty impeccable. everything is limited run vinyl (with a few cassettes) and flies off the shelf pretty much immediately. they have no website and from what i'm told aren't so good at returning phone calls either. "quick and the dead" certainly applies to collecting their stuff.

Abner Jay plays what i would call blues-folk with a tinge of gospel at times. around since the 30s, but this set seems to be mostly from the 60s-70s era. it's mostly just Abner and his electric banjo. you get some harmonica and cymbals here and there, but the focus is always Abner. dark and depressing songs of loss, suffering, and addiction. "I'm So Depressed" kills me every time. a beautiful and sad album that i can listen to over and over.

buy it if you can find it.

Human Quena Orchestra

Human Quena Orchestra - The Politics Of The Irredeemable [2009, Crucial Blast]

Crucial Blast continues to keep metal interesting with these hybrid bands. Human Quena Orchestra is out of Pittsburgh and features former members of Creation Is Crucifixion. Blends epic doom, harsh industrial, and noisy drone. This is some heavy shit.

In The Red

The Top of The Line in Low-Brow Rock 'n' Roll Music Long Players!: The Best of In The Red

a while back some friends & i put together a mix tape for another site of what we thought were the best tracks from In The Red Records. for anyone unfamiliar, In The Red is the best label for garage rock & garage punk around. hell, it's one of the best labels around period. as a bonus for people like me, everything is released on vinyl (as well as CD in most cases). due to the amount of great music, tons of great tracks, even some bands, were left out. if you find something in particular that you like, leave a comment and i'll try to post a full album. all tracks are tagged with what album the song came from.

i want to thank the other contributors, doinko, TheUnity, and roblivian, not only for the work they put in, but for giving me the go ahead to share this here.

Dÿse

Dÿse - Dÿse (Exile On Mainstream)

german duo featuring just guitar & drum. mix of post-hardcore (i guess), stoner, and psych moments, maybe even a math rock undercurrent. maybe that's right, maybe it's not. loud, repetitive killer guitar work, and pounding drum beats, that's what i know for sure. i'm not sure what genre it is, but it is a must listen. i eagerly await something new from these guys (which apparently should come in autumn).

Law Of The Rope

Law Of The Rope - Beasts Will Have You CS [2008, Not Not Fun]

black metal from a label that specializes in experimental/noise acts. and that's exactly what it sounds like. downtempo experimental black metal. not quite as weird as say Furze, but a bit off the beaten path for BM. vocals buried under distortion, creepy samples, strings & synth moments. pretty grim & interesting stuff.

Northern Sludge

hebosagil, a really great finnish sludge band recently put up their first ep and full lenght from last year up for free at their website. their sound is very similar to eyehategod, with a hint of electric wizard style fucked up psych doom thrown in.

here's their split with another great new finnish band, viisikko from last summer. viisikko remind me a lot of the seminal finnish hardcore band radiopuhelimet (esp. their 90s album jäämeri), both in their sound and general attitude. maybe their northern hometown oulu has something in the air or the water that makes you a bit twisted and weird, as viisikko, radiopuhelimet, hebosagil and a huge amount of other awesome bands (terveet kädet from tornio) are from near there.

Agoraphobic Nosebleed & Crom,

quickpost, two splits.

syphilitic vaginas and abigail are both japanese thrash metal/hardcore bands and both very good at what they do. "4 metal punk trax from ABIGAIL including covers of Bathory and Nunslaughter. 5 new SYPHILITIC VAGINAS tracks... among the most destructive Japanese style metal punk madness let loose this side of the millennium."

agoraphobic nosebleed are a legendary grind band (as i'm sure you all know). crom are a hyborian sludge/grind band. both are very fucking awesome and its about time they do a split. enjoy.

Necrodamus

Necrodamus - No Rest For The Wizard [2007, Necrowizard/Shifty]

Quick one. Project of Scott Stearns from Fistula, Ultralord, King Travolta and so on (and I think other members of Fistula). Mix of thrash and sludge, even a bit of punk here & there. Includes a take on Integrity's Judgement Day and a cover of the Misfit's Skulls. Heavy, evil riffs throughout (besides the short last track which is kind of a throwaway).

Julie Doiron

this time something not quite so heavy. julie doiron is a canadian singer-songwriter. now i'm not a huge fan of stuff like this, but this album is kind of unique in that it has a lot of realy fuzzy guitar riffs that would sound more at home on a new dead meadow album than on some canadian girly folk album. anyway worth a listen if you're into folk or the softer side of stoner.
