Dÿse

Dÿse - Dÿse (Exile On Mainstream)

german duo featuring just guitar & drum. mix of post-hardcore (i guess), stoner, and psych moments, maybe even a math rock undercurrent. maybe that's right, maybe it's not. loud, repetitive killer guitar work, and pounding drum beats, that's what i know for sure. i'm not sure what genre it is, but it is a must listen. i eagerly await something new from these guys (which apparently should come in autumn).

U.S. Christmas

U.S. Christmas - Salt The Wound [2006, R.A.I.G.]

is it stoner/sludge? is it psych? is it space rock? all are true to an extent. all i know for sure is that it's good. i'm sure this comparison has been made before about this North Carolina band, but they sound like a mix of Hawkwind and Neurosis with rougher vocals laid over the top.

they also have a 2008 album called Eat The Low Dogs on Neurot.

by the way, i saw them last weekend at the Scion Rock Fest and they killed. see them if you have the chance.

Enjoy.

Cuzo

long time no post...

alone records from spain have been one of the best european labels of all things heavy and pyschedelic for a while now. they introduced us to orthodox, and signed the almighty moho last year, a union which spawned one of my favourite 2008 releases, chotacabra. i haven't heard a single album they've released i havent liked, or like in some cases listened to religiously for months (mohos chotacabra and was one ofmy most listened albums last year).

here's their latest offering, a psych doom band from barcelona called cuzo. they've got a great goblin meets sabbath thing going with a strong desert feel to it. recommended for fans of the already mentioned goblin, mammatus, earthless, zombi and all things heavy and psychedelic.

kudos to the ripper & original uploader, a man who goes by the name of porn.

Mythical Beast

Mythical Beast - Scales [2008, Language of Stone]

first full length for Mythical Beast was released on Language of Stone, a sub-label of Drag City. they've built up some rep (at least with me) with solid split releases with both Pocahaunted & Cloudland Canyon. largely psych that at times even flirts with being stoner rock but can also swing into a trancelike rhythmic mellowness (River Blindness is a good example). the thing that really sets Mythical Beast apart is the powerful voice of singer Corinne Sweeney. she sort of reminds me at times of BellRays singer Lisa Kekaula, probably because the soulfulness that underlies her singing. a very solid debut full length that really doesn't have a weak song on it.

The Believers

Brontoursaurus [2005, Apostasy]

Lost Tracks (aka: Forgotten Tracks) [2006, Blueberry Honey]

was reminded of this by a request from someone elsewhere. these guy
s are reminiscent of the noisier output of Magik Markers (if you're looking for something like Boss, this isn't it) and can totally hold their own with them in my opinion. features members of SON OF EARTH, SHACKAMAXON, DUCK, IDEA FIRE COMPANY, & SAPAT. raw as hell. unfortunately, as far as i know they haven't put anything out since 2006.

"...The Believers like their rock raw, simple and stoopid- and so do I! Camping out around overloaded guitar riffs, distorted vocals, and pounding drums, these Sleestaks-in-satin provide the perfect soundtrack to a summer headcold..." - Chris Miller, review in Thaumaturgy blog
